:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from jbfuller317 -- Thoughtful, ground-breaking, bold perspective on humanity in the workplace : I’ll admit—the provocative title caused me some pause, but the book lured me in, and the author’s take on love and worth in the workplace kept me reading all the way through to the reader’s guide. In a style that’s friendly, honest, and insightful, Dunlop presents an approach that reimagines the way organizations view humanity in the workplace. She shares her personal journey over a twenty-year career as a female in a man’s world and an identity often split between being a management consultant or mom. After struggling with feeling worthy of love at work or home, she realized she wasn’t alone. So she designed a 6,000-person quantitative study on the value of love and worth in the workplace. In this research, almost 90% of respondents said it matters to them to feel worthy, yet five out of ten said they sometimes, often, or always struggle to feel worthy. The author calls that the Worthiness Gap. Her three paths to love and worth help close that gap. The first path calls for extending feelings of love to yourself and honoring your own worth. On the second path, the author urges readers to consider the different types of allies in their lives—friend, mentor, sponsor, benefactor. Who are the people who play those roles in your life? And how can you pay it forward? The third path explores what it means to extend love to a community of work and why it’s essential, especially in a workplace where certain people are systematically marginalized or unseen. I especially enjoyed the stories related to the author by people from different cultures and backgrounds about their own experiences in the workplace and struggles to bring their authentic selves to work. It’s a beautiful book sprinkled with lighthearted illustrations and thoughtful quotes. I suspect you’ll be thinking about the concepts presented in Elevating the Human Experience long after you finish it.
