- 5.0 out of 5 stars from A.R. Ashworth -- Dark and beautifully drawn. An extremely satisfying read. : [I purchased this book] Witch is a compelling tale of a young girl’s quest for revenge against those who murdered her mother. Along the way, she learns about loyalty, sibling love, and the power of women to bind together and create their own magic. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Heather K. -- Disturbing, magical, and enjoyable : Finbar Hawkins’ debut novel, Witch, is a disturbing and enjoyable read. We are plunged into the action from the beginning, with the murder of Evey and Dill’s mother, who the local townsfolk consider to be a witch. What unfolds after that is a stunning and lyrical tale of sibling rivalry, familial love, magic, and the ties that bind. Most of all, though, this is a story of revenge and redemption — revenge for Evey’s mother’s death, and the redemption of Evey, who is fuelled by anger and grief. Though she initially stands alone in her arc, Evey eventually pulls together a family of friends around her, who help her exact retribution against those who murdered her mother. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lucinda -- Intense adventure set in a dark, poetic past : Finbar Hawkins has written a book to rival those of Gaiman and Pullman in terms of the workings of its universe, yet with a new voice all his own. This is a story that pulls you in from its dramatic opening scene, right through to the conclusion via every intricate detail; a reflection of candles in glancing eyes, drops of water on skin, sleek dark hair like an otter. It's a richly drawn as well as a moving, unforgettable read. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tobias Sturt -- A page-turning tale of historical revenge and redemption with a unique voice. : October is a time for witches, and has a fan of folk horror - stories about the mysteries of the British countryside - I was especially keen to read Finbar Hawkins’ Witch - and happily its the perfect Autumnal adventure. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from The Magus -- Beautifully written, delicate and dark. : This book is a marvel. Full of aching loss, pain and jealousy it sucks you in and one becomes instantly swept away on the tide of emotions. The narrative is one of the most beautifully written I have read in a long time. Powerful and bold. It is just a wonder to read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 9, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nikki Macbeth -- This is one of those books you keep close and don’t stick in a box in the garage. : I’m a fan of literally escapism and this book hit all the marks. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from rubies in my basket -- A different kind of adventure : I found "Witch" a very strange novel at first. Finbar pushes language and narrative to its limit! I have researched the history of witches for the last ten years, including Matthew Hopkins, the Pendle witches etc and found this angle really exciting. However I still found the narrative difficult to follow at times, meanwhile really appreciating this difference (I've written two metaphysical novels myself) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dino -- Wonderful read : I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fabulous book, delicious descriptive writing that paints a rich picture of ancient times. Edge of my seat exciting and frightening in places, funny, touching and full of emotion it pulls the heartstrings and you fall in love with the vivid characters. I can't wait to find out what happens next! The factual research and detail adds credence to the story and its a compelling piece of litrature in our troubled times, with a heartwarming message for young and old. I can see Witch being a highly successful film or TV series. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 27, 2020 )
